La Lonja de la Seda

If Valencia has one architectural highlight that EVERYONE must see, it's La Lonja de la Seda – the old Silk Exchange. This masterpiece of Valencian Gothic architecture from the 15th century is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site but also one of Spain's most impressive buildings.

The name gives it away: silk was once traded here, and at that time Valencia was one of the richest and most powerful trading cities in the Mediterranean. The wealth from the silk trade enabled the construction of this magnificent building – and you can see the prosperity in it!

The absolute highlight is the Column Hall (Sala de Contratación) – a huge room with spirally twisted columns that wind elegantly up to the ceiling. When you stand between these 24 slender columns and look up, you feel like you're in a stone palm forest. The acoustics are superb, by the way – concerts are sometimes held here!

Besides the Column Hall, there's the Patio de los Naranjos – a charming courtyard with orange trees (of course!), the Consulado del Mar with its magnificent coffered ceiling, and a tower that once served as a prison for defaulting merchants. Business was no joke back then!

The details are breathtaking: gargoyles in the form of mythical creatures, intricately decorated doors, Gothic windows, and Latin inscriptions appealing to merchants to trade honestly. A building that breathes history!
