L'Albufera Natural Park

Just half an hour south of Valencia awaits a natural paradise that many visitors don't even have on their radar – and that's a mistake! L'Albufera Natural Park is a huge freshwater lake, surrounded by rice fields, canals, and unique flora and fauna. This is where Valencia recharges its green soul!

The name "Albufera" comes from the Arabic "al-buhayra" (small sea), and the lake used to be much larger. Today it's still impressive – Spain's largest lake! What makes it special? The endless rice fields around it, which completely change their appearance depending on the season: in spring they're flooded and reflect the sky like giant water surfaces, in summer they glow lush green, and in autumn they transform into a golden sea.

And here's the thing: right here, in the villages around the Albufera, paella was invented! The fishermen and rice farmers cooked their rice with whatever they had – vegetables, rabbit, snails – and created Spain's national dish. The most authentic paella restaurants can be found in El Palmar, a small village in the middle of the park. Here, paella still tastes like grandma's!

A highlight is a boat ride on the lake in a traditional "Albuferenc" boat. You glide through the still waters, watching flamingos, herons and other water birds, and feel the absolute peace – a stark contrast to the lively city!

But the very best thing about the Albufera? The sunsets! They're legendary and among the most beautiful you'll ever see. The sky turns all imaginable shades of red, orange, and violet, and when the sun sinks into the lake, you'll understand why Valencians love their Albufera so much.
