What are Las Fallas?

Las Fallas is Valencia's biggest festival and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2016. This year marks the tenth anniversary of that recognition.

From 1 to 19 March, Valencia transforms into an open-air museum: over 750 monumental sculptures are erected across the city – satirical works of art made from wood, papier-mâché and polystyrene that artists spend months creating.

On 19 March, the feast of Saint Joseph, they all burn in a single night: the Cremà.

Key dates

• 1 – 19 March
  Mascletà – daily at 2:00 pm
  Plaza del Ayuntamiento – a deafening rhythm of gunpowder and explosions. Not meant to be seen, but felt.
• 6 March
  Festival lights switch-on
  The most impressive illuminated streets are in Ruzafa and Malvarrosa.
• 15 March
  Plantà & L'Albà
  The children's fallas are erected. At dawn, fireworks light up the entire city. On 16 March, the large fallas follow.
• 17 & 18 March
  Ofrenda – Flower offering
  Over 100,000 falleras and falleros in traditional dress carry bouquets to the Virgin of the Forsaken at Plaza de la Virgen, where a giant floral statue is created.
• 18 March
  Nit del Foc
  The most spectacular fireworks display of the festival at the Monteolivete Bridge – the absolute highlight for pyro enthusiasts.
• 19 March
  Cremà
  From 8:00 pm the children's fallas burn, from 10:00 pm the large ones, and at 11:00 pm the falla at Plaza del Ayuntamiento. The grand finale.
